Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum
Start early to beat crowds at the Terracotta Army, one of the world's greatest archaeological discoveries. Explore three massive excavation pits housing thousands of life-sized warriors, horses, and chariots created over 2,000 years ago. The museum provides excellent context about Emperor Qin's tomb complex. Allow time for the exhibition halls showcasing bronze chariots and explaining the incredible craftsmanship. The site is extensive, so wear comfortable shoes.

Book tickets online in advance to skip queues. Arrive at opening time (8:30 AM) for the best experience with fewer crowds.

Shaanxi noodles and dumplings Budget
Afternoon
Fortifications of Xi'an (Ancient City Wall)
Explore Xi'an's remarkably preserved Ming Dynasty city walls, among the oldest and best-maintained in China. Rent a bicycle and cycle the complete 14-kilometer circuit atop the wall for spectacular views of old and new Xi'an. The wall features impressive watchtowers, gates, and ramparts. The experience offers unique perspective on the city's layout and is especially photogenic. You can also walk sections if you prefer a slower pace to appreciate the architectural details and fortification systems.
2-3 hours $10-15 (entrance and bike rental)
Access from South Gate (Yongningmen) which has the most impressive entrance. Bike rental available on top of the wall.
Evening
Muslim Quarter exploration and dinner
Wander through the atmospheric streets near the Great Mosque of Xi'an, sampling street food like yangrou paomo (lamb soup with bread), roujiamo (Chinese hamburger), and persimmon cakes. The area comes alive at night with food stalls, traditional crafts, and local energy. Visit the illuminated Bell and Drum Tower Square for evening photos.

Where to Stay Tonight

Inside the ancient city walls, near South Gate or Bell Tower (Mid-range hotel in a traditional courtyard building or modern hotel with historic views)

Central location provides walking access to major sites, restaurants, and evening entertainment while offering authentic atmosphere within the historic district.

The Terracotta Warriors site gets extremely crowded after 10 AM. Take the public bus rather than expensive tourist buses - it's cheaper and just as convenient. For the city wall, sunset cycling (around 5-6 PM depending on season) offers the best lighting and cooler temperatures.
Day 1 Budget: $90-130
2

Buddhist Heritage & Tang Dynasty Glory

Southern Xi'an and Historic Center
Discover Xi'an's spiritual side and Tang Dynasty legacy through iconic pagodas, world-class museums, and cultural performances.
Morning
Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and Shaanxi History Museum
Begin at the iconic Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, a seven-story Buddhist tower built in 652 AD to house sacred texts brought from India. The surrounding temple complex offers peaceful gardens and Buddhist art. Then visit the exceptional Shaanxi History Museum, showcasing treasures from thirteen dynasties including Zhou bronzes, Han jade, and Tang Dynasty murals and gold. The museum's collection provides essential context for understanding Xi'an's role as ancient China's capital. Free admission but requires advance reservation.
3-4 hours combined $8-15 (pagoda entrance; museum is free with reservation)
Reserve Shaanxi History Museum tickets online 1-3 days in advance as daily capacity is limited. Morning slots fill quickly during peak season.
Lunch
A restaurant near the museum area specializing in Tang Dynasty-style cuisine or Shaanxi cold noodles
Traditional Shaanxi or Tang-inspired dishes Mid-range
Afternoon
Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi'an Museum
Visit the elegant Small Wild Goose Pagoda, built in 707 AD with a distinctive cracked-but-standing structure from historical earthquakes. The peaceful grounds offer traditional gardens and occasional shadow puppet performances. The adjacent Xi'an Museum houses excellent collections of jade, pottery, and cultural relics in a modern facility. The area is less crowded than other major sites, providing a more contemplative experience. The combination offers insight into Tang Dynasty Buddhist culture and daily life.
2-3 hours $0-5 (often free admission)
Evening
Tang Paradise or traditional performance and farewell dinner
If time permits, visit Tang Paradise for its illuminated Tang Dynasty-themed gardens and cultural shows. Alternatively, attend a Tang Dynasty music and dance performance at a theater near your hotel. Enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Shaanxi restaurant, trying dishes you haven't sampled yet like guokui (crispy flatbread) or hulutou (pork intestine soup).

Where to Stay Tonight

Same area inside city walls for convenience (Continue at your previous accommodation or similar central location)

Remaining in the same area eliminates check-out/check-in hassles and maximizes your limited time for sightseeing on the final day.

The Shaanxi History Museum offers both free and paid exhibition halls. The free sections are excellent, but the paid special exhibitions (around $15) showcase extraordinary artifacts like Tang Dynasty frescoes worth the extra cost. Visit the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda fountain show in the evening if you have time - it's free and spectacular.
Day 2 Budget: $70-110
